Controversial ‘NadaDada Motel’ artists to cast spellbinding show/project in ‘Five Rooms at the Witch’
Reno pioneers of new modern-art movement to showcase works
June 17-20 at Strega Bar; live music, back-alley party also slated
Eight pioneers of Reno’s homegrown modern-art movement — NadaDada Motel — will be collaborating on a special program, “Five Rooms at the Witch,” during this year’s edition of the controversial annual project.
The fourth annual exhibition of independent artwork, of which the only rule is no rules, will run Thursday, June 17, through Sunday, June 20. NadaDada Motel will infiltrate a number of establishments at the southwest and northwest edges of downtown along Arlington Avenue, including the historic El Cortez Hotel’s Trocadero Nightclub.
In all, more than 100 local or visiting visual artists will show off their creations, says NadaDada Motel cofounder Dianna Sion. “We have a really, really strong arts community here in Reno,” she says. “People are being noticed now. NadaDada Motel is for any creative, artistic genius in any genre.”
Most participating venues are for all ages. However bars will give admission only to people over 21.
A focal point of this year’s event will be Strega Bar, 310 S. Arlington, where Sion and seven cohorts will display their contemporary visual works in an exhibit billed, “Five Rooms at the Witch.” Joining Sion will be David Dory, Amy Huffman, sk james, Alex Lemus, Trelaine Lewis, Nino Paternostro and Ashlee Stone. “‘5-RAW’ combines old-world techniques, pop culture, modern digitization, subliminal programming and human nature’s innate lust for lust,” Sion says. A Saturday-night bash will feature live music by local bands Crush and Merkin, DJ crew-Tonal Balance, and others. “It will stir the pot with a full-blown, free-entry, back-alley party,” Sion says.
“Each 5-RAW artist brings something unique to this witch’s roundtable. Together, their work is a complementary union revealing insight into today’s fast-paced culture and where it might lead us. NadaDada Motel has inspired articles in major publications such as the New York Times, and has attracted collectors from around the globe.”
Adds artist David Dory: “Art is the one thing that speaks to everyone. Art transcends time and ties us all together as the human race.”
Says Sion: “5-RAW promises to make a mark on the entire art world.”
